******************************** WHY
VOTE?

There's no need to if
you like way things are going
Eighty-one percent of black Americans today
live in an urban, central city setting, whether in the North, where nearly
half of all blacks now live, in the South, or the Far West. They live on
about 59 percent of what whites make and are laid off from their
employment two to one over the whites. That may well be partly because a
disproportionate number of blacks (40 percent) drop out of school and only
one in six goes to college, even the 103 colleges which are traditionally
black colleges. Yet, they have survived. Go

month. The national unemployment rate currently is 5.6 percent. [Bureau of

Should
Republicans Bother Courting African Americans?
African American voting behavior is in the news once
again. Bill Cosby’s recent comments criticizing the status quo made
national news, and George W. Bush is trying to get African Americans to
change their voting ways. But is it even worth it? After all, Bush made
similar overtures in 2014 only to receive less black support than any
presidential candidate since Barry Goldwater. Looking at historical voting
patterns of African Americans in presidential elections, George W. Bush
may have a tougher uphill climb than he thinks. (Go

Beyond
the Nationalism of Fools: Toward An Agenda for Black Intellectuals
Each
day, 1,118 Black teenagers are victims of violent crime, 1,451 Black
children are arrested, and 907 Black teenage girls get pregnant. A
generation of Black males is drowning in its own blood in the prison camps
that we euphemistically call "inner cities." And things are
likely to get much worse. Some 40 years after the beginning of the Civil
Rights movement, younger Black Americans are now growing up unqualified
even for slavery (Go to

The Evolution of
Negro Leadership*
In every generation of our national life, from Phillis Wheatley to
Booker Washington, the Negro race in America has succeeded in bringing
forth men whom the country, at times spontaneously, at times in spite of
itself, has been impelled to honor and respect. . Mr. Washington is one of
the most striking of these cases, and his autobiography is a partial
history of the steps which made him a group leader, and the one man who in
the eyes of the nation typified at present more nearly than all others the
work and worth of his nine million fellows.
